Home Furnishings and Lifestyle Tips

1. First you have to ask yourself “what is this room’s purpose”?

Are you going to use this space as a meeting place, relaxing retreat or to entertain friends and family? Do you have children or animals who will bring a little bit of chaos to the mix? Work with soft edges and forgiving colors that compliment your lifestyle and focus on functionality, what about a dual-purpose room?

2. Color sets the mood for your space.

Work with your chosen palate, but don’t be afraid to add accent pieces that make a statement! Mix textures and patterns to create depth so that your space looks inviting and lived in. If you work with a neutral base it will allow for flexibility in your furniture and accessories.

3. Mix and match new purchases with antique finds.

Your bank account will thank you later. Pick a focal point for the room, whether it’s a plush sofa, ornate rug or beautifully decorated coffee table, let that item help define your space. Recently coffee tables have stood out as a vehicle to showcase your interests and unique pieces such as flowers, books or trinkets. It can be an investment, have history or prompt a conversation.

4. Repurpose your pre-existing possessions.

DIY’s can take an out dated or over used piece and give it relevance and rejuvenation. A piece that’s original purpose has passed its prime may find new meaning with a fresh coat of paint. There are countless ideas for Do It Yourself projects online that vary from easy to intricate so take it upon yourself to fix what needs to be fixed.

5. No need to rush it, take your time and fill in the blanks as you go.

It’s fun to complete one big renovation but it’s not always practical. Take the time necessary to collect quality pieces that will come together cohesively. Regardless of the time it took, your new spaces will be everything you imagined, and more.
